Walk Logistics
How and where do I sign up for a walk and how much does it cost?
The preferred way is through our website home page on Eventbrite links. We also have three Meetup groups. If you see us on Meetup, please click through to Eventbrite there as well. Our events are mostly FREE; however, donations are always welcome at the time of registration, or via our website as well. Once you register, you will receive a confirmation email. One or two special events each year may require a registration fee. These costs/details will be fully explained on the Eventbrite information page.
What should I do prior to my walk?
Please be sure to monitor your email prior to the walk in case of any important updates or changes due to unexpected circumstances, such as bad weather conditions. We will also provide the contact information for the walk leader(s) in case you have any questions, or you can email us at: info@freewalkers.org. Please arrive 10 minutes early to check in with the leader.
How can I get to your walks?
In many instances, our walks begin and/or end at or close to a public transportation option so a car may not be necessary. If you do choose to drive there may be parking, either free or paid. Other walks (e.g., our Columbia Trail and Jockey Hollow hikes) are more rural and require a car. In those cases, the parks where we start, and finish will usually have parking available. In some cases, a carpool may be possible – but NOT always. Another option is to partner with a friend to leave one car at an end point and shuttle together to the start or take a LYFT.
Do we cancel walks due to weather conditions?
We walk year-round and, in most weather, however we may postpone and/or cancel walks if there is a chance that weather poses a danger (e.g., lightning, downpours, high winds, heavy snow, extreme heat, etc.). If so, we will notify registered walkers. This is why you must check your emails/texts before the start time. Keep in mind weather can be fine to when we start and unpredictably change along the way, in which case, we may decide to end the walk if necessary.
Can I start and do a part of the distance?
Yes, for sure. If a walk runs close to public transportation routes it is easy enough to shorten the distance. This is up to YOU! Sorry, but we cannot offer specific directions for all transportation options as we all come from different places. Example, the Hudson River Loop Walk is 28 miles, but there are PATH, bus, rail and subway stops on the route so participants can “call it a day” at any time. Some walks offer “mini” options where participants can turn around at a certain juncture and shorten the distance. If you choose to leave a walk you are on your own – your decision.
Tip: you can always find walking directions on your phone apps if needed.
What is the pace of a walk?
It is difficult to say exactly what a walk pace will be. Each walk is unique is its own way, so best to read the description on Eventbrite about pace and distance. For very long walks we will have a leader out front and as often as possible someone sweeping in the rear. We encourage you to walk at a pace that is comfortable for you. Remember that sometimes we stay together and sometimes we do NOT.
