The End

If we do it again I'll do more than the 4 miles this time. I met the group as they left PATH in NYC and walked up to Penn Station with them. It was fun; good conversation and a chance to look at the City lights.

EWR to NYC!

I walked with the group from Newark Penn Station to New York Penn Station. (20-25 miles?) I did not know I could do that! I am grateful for the experience and for the wonderful people I met. I am very inspired to seek out more trails in my area of northern NJ.

Walk the East Coast Greenway in New Jersey

Yesterday, on a cool gray May morning, I walked 11 miles along the East Coast Greenway from the train station in Cranford, NJ

to Weequahic Park in Newark, NJ with my friend Risa. We had joined a group of walkers on the Big Walk who had started at 5:00 am at MetroPark on their 50-mile hike to Penn Station in New Yrok City.

The portion of the trail we walked wound through parks, including Nomagean Park in Cranford, and pleasant…

weather for big event

Hi All hikers,

Weather for tomorrow soounds like it could be good for walking. It won't be hot and it won't be sunny. Maybe we will get lucky and it won't rain too much. A lot of the forcasted rain in this area never happens because it gets deflected north by the Pennsylvania mountains. Rain is not really a disaster either because we are not walking in dirt that turns to mud like the Appalachian Trail. An extra pair of shoes and socks might be a good idea. Just my opinion. I…

Do the Barnes Dance: a New way to walk in D.C.

Washington D.C. is experimenting with a new crosswalk concept its orgin traced back to the "Barnes Dance" or "pedestrian scramble" originating back in the 1950's. The original idea was to stop traffic in all directions when the light changes and allow pedestrians to cross on any corner. The version they are testing for D.C. not only allows all… Continue

Walking Newark to New York - NJ2NY50 Practice Walk 3rd Segment - 5/2/10

We slowly gathered in Penn Station Newark Sunday, May 2nd for our last planned practice walk of 20 miles before “The Big Walk” just 3 weeks away. Igor and I carpooled after we both missed our morning trains. Maybe that was a sign that our timing was going to be off…

Distant Thoughts

The Sounds of a Long Walk

Just a few days ago, I noticed, maybe for the first time, the sounds of the Great Canal Walk. For most of the 40 miles and 15 hours that day there was an absence of sound in this body of water as still as glass on that calm day....
