30-mile walk from Exchange Place, Jersey City to World Trade Center, New York City - June 9, 2012
| Walker | Thoughts and Comments | Suggestions |
| AL WALKER | It is great. Always wanted to walk across the GWB. Was very impressed with how the NJ has taken shape. | Start on time. That is just the way I roll. |
| ALEX RODRIGUEZ | It was stated by many that this walk was the most visually appealing. It had views of different scenery. It wasn't boring - visually. It was a great ending walk to the season. A major success. | I suggest having some road support present at a few major landmarks. It would help avoid walkers from getting lost. Also make it more known to walkers what to expect at least after the GWB to properly prepare and possibly car transport for ones who afraid to walk over bridges (heights). |
| AMY HEBARD | I loved it! Beautiful venue. | Two: Have sharpies for people to put their first names on, on their number (it was great, by the way, to have those!). Also, a healthy breakfast option - maybe yogurt? bananas? |
| AMY TRAUTWEIN | Terrific! Great people, great views, and a definite sense of accomplishment. Being able to see the starting and end points from the GW Bridge was a nice perk. | Identifying the location of water fountains for refills to minimize weight carried at the start? I found this site yesterday, and wish I had read it beforehand, about preventing blisters, etc.: http://www.thewalkingsite.com/blisters.html |
| BRUCE DAIN | should break into groups;fast pace,moderate and slow,so always near a leader. | see above |
| CELIA OLENIAK | I had support from other walkers without them i don't think i would finish the walk. I would like to thank Tom,Paul.Nancy and there were 2 other people i walked. | no |
| CHARLENA SEARS | Scenic, invigorating walk. Well organized. Hope to do it again. | |
| CHARLES C TANG | Nice day! Great group of people. I walked with Ron and Albert. The walk was really very enjoyable. | |
| CINDY PHILLIPS | Beautiful scenery, nice group of people! | A little more organization along hike where the there is no greenway. |
| DAVID ASCHER | There are enough opportunities along the way to purchase refreshments and use bathroom facilities that no other assitance is really needed. | |
| E. MCCANDISH | Several of the garages that I tried were closed at 7:30 on a Sat AM. I suggest that you warn people to call ahead and check. | |
| ELIZABETH BRODY | I had not been on the Jersey City-Hoboken-Weehawken stretch of the HRWW in a year, when large sections were still behind construction fences. Those fences are now down, and my companion and I were delighted to see what had been going on: Pier C Park in Hoboken, Weehawken Cove, and the Weehawken Waterfront Park and Recreation Center and the 9/11 Memorial -- all beautifully designed and deservedly popular already early in the morning. Plus those magnificent views of Manhattan. A winning combination. | |
| GLORIA FRANCO | Just lovely. | |
| GLORIA MATVEEV | It was a beautiful walk with spectacular views. | Throughout my entire walk up to the World Trade Center I didn't see a single organizer to encourage us walkers, to pump up the energy or greet us with water or something. I think there should be a few leaders in sight. If the group is too large break it up into fast, moderate, slow walkers. |
| ILENE SILVER | On a walk this long, be prepared with light layers, light poncho in the event of rain. Snacks and water can be purchased along the route. | |
| JAMES MCROBERT | Well-organized, great group of people, fun event. | |
| JAMES PHILLIPS | Very enjoyable walk! | Better route maps along areas where trail is incomplete |
| JANE EDGE | No comment at this time | Not at the moment |
| JEFF GATTO | great as always! | |
| JEN WOOLERY | I loved this walk. It was my favorite so far | |
| JOHN LUCZTCKI | Great walk and views. | You might consider enhancing the written directions to the plaza where we had lunch to include some indication of milage, much like as documented as you approach the GWB. Other than this small suggestion, everything was first-rate. |
| KATE WEYMOUTH | I loved walking with the group and my favorite part was seeing people throughout the day with their number bibs on and we instantly had a connection and similar goal. it was really nice! | My only suggestion would be to start the walk on time, we rushed all morning to make it there by 7:30, when we didn't start walking until 8:30 |
| KATHY FULLER | I live in San Diego and this was the first time that I was actually in town and could make a FreeWalker event. I used to live in Jersey City and work in New York, so this was a particularly meaningful route. Thank you for an AMAZING experience. I wish you had a branch in San Diego!!!! | It's hard to improve on perfection. The one really tricky spot was getting up the GW bridge. There were several of us that had trouble figuring it out, but we did! |
| L DELUCCHI | I absolutely loved it because the start was easy to get to. The route was fantastic and once in Manhattan, it was easy for people to finish at any point that was most convenient for them. | If the event gets bigger as I predict it will, it would be great trying to have a couple of pacers so people who are interested would have the opportunity to walk with a group selecting the pace they feel most comfortable with. |
| L LOMBARDO | The packet of info that was handed out had great details. Perhaps upload document to the site before the walk? I eventually ignored it b/c it was too thick to carry in my pocket and too much of an inconvenience to retrieve from my backpack. | Thanks for such a great experience and walk! Thanks to Paul for checking in on the walkers on the NYC Greenway. |
| LEAH F KUPERMAN | enjoyed the walk and the comraderie | |
| LINDA MIDOLO | Great to see my walking partners | |
| LYNN JACOBS | The NJ side was really beautiful and I saw the water side community up close. I enjoyed the scenery of NYC a lot. | |
| M SAMANIEGO | To be together as a team | |
| MAGGIE LEUNG | The walk was very nice first part of the NJ side. Then the geese dropping were a bit much to deal with. | |
| MARGOT MALIN | I very much enjoyed the walk. Originally I had planned to complete the walk, but due to a medical issue, upon the advice of my doctor, I decided to only complete most of the NJ side. I was surprised at how much walking we ended up doing on River Road up around Edgwwater. That was the area we had trouble with the map, so maybe we missed the waterfront route, but it didn't look like there was one in that area. | It was well organized. |
| NADEEM FIROZ | great | nothing really get newspapers, radio, tv & social media help to promote this and seek donations |
| NICHOLE NUNES | I enjoyed the company and the spectacular views. | |
| PAT STRUBEL | great day. The jersey side was best. | come back over the bridge and go somewhere else in jersey |
| PAUL IRELAND | I suggest at each major stop there should be someone there to assist walkers if they need help with anytthing. | |
| PAUL KICZEK | Fantastic experience with memorable skylines and view from the bridge. Loved the Little Red Lighthouse and seeing the Enterprise. | Build in more mid-walk support. |
| PAUL MASZCZAK | Fantastic environment and beautiful walk. I'm just sorry I was late to the event as I had hoped to meet my fellow walkers. | Nope. |
| PHILIP GROSSMAN | because of the distance, number of participants, & varied walking pace of paticipants, I did not see any of the other paticipants in the hike after edgewater near the GW bridge, & kindly note that I walk at a 3 mile per hour pace. | |
| RENATA LUISI | Walkway up to Port Imperial (and a list past) was great. Walking on River Road was not as pleasant (too much traffic). | Find a way to possibly avoid walking on the main thoroughfare. |
| RISA OLINSKY | I forgot my own suggestion, but next time I want to remember this - TO BRING MARKERS so we can write at least first names on our number tags.. This way when we've met someone we can be reminded of their names - of course this can be optional to walkers - I' d love being able to walk behind someone and say - HI! | |
| ROBB KUSHNER | A wonderful chance to connect with other walkers and experience all the progress in developing the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. Lots of great stuff to see along the way! | keep up the great work! |
| ROBERTO ROMERO | The walk was great. We got sidetracked and lost our trail a couple of times but found it and enjoyed the walk and learned new and exciting paths. | One thing that would be nice if possible is to re organize and reunite all walkers at midpoint after lunch to continue the rest of the walk and reach the end together. |
| RON PALOCHKO | Another absolutely fabulous life experience. Can't wait till the Fall when we do it again. | |
| SHARON BRAY | It was all very well planned and timed. The only thing I would do next time is arrive 10-15 minutes before departure, rather than 30 minutes, as check in was very efficient. I enjoyed hearing the passion of the speakers who were involved in the creation of the walkway. I also really appreciated having breakfast & such clear maps waiting for us at the beginning. Thanks for organizing it, it was great. | No - I liked the low key nature of it. |
| SIEW NG | I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It's my first walk with the group. I am very impressed with the organization of the event. | |
| XIANGYU YE | Great, very enjoyable. |

Just a few days ago, I noticed, maybe for the first time, the sounds of the Great Canal Walk. For most of the 40 miles and 15 hours that day there was an absence of sound in this body of water as still as glass on that calm day....
