Event Description

This Columbus Day 34 mile walk starts at the train station in Millburn, NJ and follows an old marked trail called the "Lenape Trail" in beautiful South Mountain, Eagle Rock and Mills Reservations. It includes suburban towns such as Montclair, West Orange, Verona, Bloomfield, Nutley, and Belleville, and ends in urban Newark.

This is the third annual LENAPE34 which turned out to be very challenging yet popular with the FreeWalkers last year. The walker is faced with about 50% wooded trail and 50% suburban and urban sidewalks and streets. Shorter daylight hours add to the physical and mental challenge.

There are alternatives for shorter segments. So you may choose to do less but can still walk along with the group. We'll also have the support of two train lines for mass transportation both to and from several points along the way. Since its on a Monday (but not fully observed holiday), we'll have the benefit of working with a full weekday schedule for this particular walk - allowing more frequent trains for your convenience. There are also several busses runnng in the area.

As always, the walk is free and everyone is invited. Most of this trail is a major segment of the Liberty Water Gap Trail, the 130-mile east-to-west trail across the entire state of New Jersey. Its name "Lenape" suggests honoring the Native American ancestors of our area on a day where we also honor the discovery of America. So, we're tagging this event the "Origins Walk".

This is an effort to support the revitalization of the Lenape Trail and the Liberty Water Gap Trail concept as well as help support a unique natural-to-urban trail and pedestrian environment which should be seen and experience by more citizens.

NOTE: We will use be using the old southern segment in South Mountain Reservation - not the western continuation (East Hanover) of the Liberty Water Gap Trail.

I remember that it is called Ferry Street BBQ on Ferry Street two blocks from Penn Station.I will send the link if you could not find it. I love Ironbound, BTW.

Haobo, where do you get your Portuguese BBQ chicken? I love Portuguese food. From Iron Bound?

Two other notes:
1) Though what you can see are pretty much fries and rice only, it was definitely not fried chicken --- it is bona fide Portuguese style open fire BBQ chicken.
2) While I was eating, a guy came over and said to me something that I probably unconsciously tried to not pay attention to. He came back and said to me again that "you certainly got a plan". After pausing one or two seconds, I replied that "yeah, I've gotten a hell of a plan". Considering the reputation of Newark at night, I felt pretty good of myself at that moment.

Paul, nice post. Have you figured out how we had gotten lost? I still could not. Maybe it is not that important --- I almost forgot it after a long day of exercises (I mean it!).

Hoabo,

I thought it was going to be fried chicken.

I think you needed some protein.

I've got to work, but plan to go until Hemlock falls before I have to break away from the group.

The Sounds of a Long Walk

Just a few days ago, I noticed, maybe for the first time, the sounds of the Great Canal Walk. For most of the 40 miles and 15 hours that day there was an absence of sound in this body of water as still as glass on that calm day....
